Luka Veljovic joined the Institute in October 2024 as a Probationer Research Student in Law, supported by the Institute for Ethics in AI Scholarship. He previously attained a Master of Law from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (People's Republic of China), where his research centred on the integration of smart contracts within the framework of Chinese contract law. His undergraduate studies were undertaken at several European institutions, including the University of Montenegro, the University of Maribor (Slovenia), the University of Zagreb (Croatia), and Côte d'Azur University (France). Luka is also a qualified attorney-at-law in Montenegro, where he has worked with numerous clients from various industries, specialising in law and new technologies.
Luka's research focuses on the recognition and enforceability of decisions rendered through decentralised justice mechanisms within the legal framework of England and Wales. His objective is to establish both theoretical foundations and practical insights that promote the development of alternative dispute resolution methods in smart contracts. Furthermore, Luka examines the philosophical and policy implications of these emerging trends in dispute resolution and assesses their potential impact on democratic values. Luka will continue this research at Oxford, under the supervision of Professor John Tasioulas and Professor Horst Eidenmüller.
