The Institute for Ethics in AI partnered with the House of Kosova to co-host a thought-provoking panel on “AI in a Democratic Society” at Davos on 22 January 2025. Chaired by Professor John Tasioulas, Director of the Institute, the discussion examined the growing influence of AI on democracy, governance, and public trust.
Joining the panel were Dr Caroline Emmer De Albuquerque Green (Director of Research at the Institute for Ethics in AI, Audrey Tang (Cyber Ambassador-at-Large, Taiwan), Brendan McCord (Founder, Cosmos Institute), and Angela Oduor Lungati (Executive Director, Ushahidi). The conversation explored whether AI is a force for democratic renewal—enabling more inclusive and participatory governance—or if it risks deepening polarization, entrenching corporate power, and eroding human agency.
Reflecting on the event, Professor John Tasioulas shared:
“It was a pleasure for the Institute for Ethics in AI to co-host this vital discussion with House of Kosova in Davos. AI is already shaping our democratic institutions—whether for better or worse depends on how we design, regulate, and integrate these technologies into society. Conversations like these are essential to ensuring AI serves the public good.”
