Dr Carissa Véliz of the Institute for Ethics in AI has received the Herbert A. Simon Award for Outstanding Research in Computing and Philosophy.

Dr Carissa Véliz is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at Oxford University’s Institute for Ethics in AI and a Fellow at Hertford College. Her research focuses on privacy, technology, moral and political philosophy, and public policy.

The award, which comes from the International Association of Computing and Philosophy, recognises scholars at an early stage of their academic career whose research is likely to reshape debates at the nexus of computing and philosophy.

She said: “I feel delighted, honoured, and grateful. I hope that my work can motivate citizens and policymakers alike to end data practices that are undermining equality, fairness, and democracy.”

Dr Véliz’s research focuses on privacy, technology, moral and political philosophy, and public policy. It has already had an influential impact on debates and discourse in both politics and media. She has advised governments in Spain and the UK, and her book, Privacy Is Power: Why and How You Should Take Back Control of Your Data, was named one of The Economist’s books of the year for 2020.
